Warren McCullough (joined 2015-ish)..
I used to cycle from Warilla to Warrawong and return each day for work. I drove from Kiama to Warilla, where my bike was stored in Steve Flowers garage. We then rode together to work at Warrawong HS for about 7 years, from 1988 – 1995.
The bike I rode was built by a student at the school (Nelio), who was working part time in a bike store at Port Kembla. It was a pretty swish affair, with indexed gears!
A change of employment took me away from this regular riding, and it wasn’t until around 2014 when a local Kiama cycling group known as the Swampeys invited me on a cycling trip to Beechworth in Victoria, riding the rail trails, that I took up regular cycling again.
The old bike was looking a bit decrepit by then, so I dropped by the Kiama Cycles and Sports store to look for an update – and Des Howley helped me out with a shiny new Apollo bike that he had in stock.
Des let me know about the Kiama BUG regular rides. Although there were rides on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays, I was working full time then, and so it was Sunday rides only for me, and the occasional Monday rides on Long Weekends.
