To the best of my knowledge and records available to me, the following is a brief summary of KBUG’s activities over the past 14 years. (Ross Mansell – 2018)
This group of cycling enthusiasts was formed back in 2003 with the aim of organising regular supervised rides for adults in the local area and also various other locations throughout NSW.
Janelle Walker and Hugh Irving were the founders of KBUG and administered the affairs of the group, along with the assistance of a small committee. There have been several changes to the committee over the years and currently a committee of seven oversee the activities of the group.
Back in the carly days there were two rides every week, one in the Kiama area on Saturdays and the other in Berry on Sunday mornings. Currently KBUG conduct rides every Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Thursday. Some of these rides attract up to 30 cyclists. These regular rides are held in areas from Thirroul in the north to locations in the Shoalhaven in the south.
KBUG has a current membership of 93 financial members. (2018)
KBUG is affiliated with Bicycle NSW and all of our rides are conducted under guidelines set by Bicycle NSW, to reduce the risk of accidents and assist people to have an enjoyable outing. Our rides are all under the control of qualified ride leaders who are accredited by Bicycle New South Wales.
KBUG is continually involved in advocacy issues to improve conditions on our local roads and paths for all kinds of cyclists, from family groups, to the more serious road riders. Our members also volunteer their time and knowledge to work with our local council Walking Tracks and Cycleways Committee.
KBUG is funded by membership fees and regular sponsorship from our local bike shop, Kiama Cycles and Sports. Other contributions have been received over the years from Kiama Council, Kiama Leagues Club and Kiama Bowling Club.
KBUG also assist Kiama Council’s Road Safety Officer in the annual Family Fun Day Bike Week event in our region. This ride starts at Black Beach, Kiama Harbour and skirts the scenic coastline to Kendalls Beach and return. Last year this ride attracted over one hundred cyclists.
KBUG has for the past ten years, supervised a ride in our local area as part of our local Seniors Week activities organised by Kiama Council.
